Let's say you are setting up a top-rope anchor using two different lengths of webbing, on two different trees or whatever. How do you adjust the lengths of webbing so that each piece of webbing is at the proper length. Do you adjust the water knot or what?

Just clip into the webbing that happens to contain the proper central point. You can also use just a single piece of looped webbing. Either way, you have a double webbing strand to clip into. You twist one of the strands into a bight, and clip into than and around the other strand. That way, if either of the anchor points fails, your biner will still be caught in the webbing and not just pull off

It depends ...

How much lower is one biner? An inch or two? Then tie an overhand knot in the longer sling. It'll eat up an inch or two of webbing.

Several inches? If you've girth-hitched a tree, then shift the knot around till the two biners are level. If you've draped a tied sling around a block, tie a slip-hitch and clip the biner to the resulting bight. Move the slip-hitch knot around the block until the two biners are level.

If there's a lot of difference, several feet say, then adjust the water knot.

Cheers, DH
