The Arete Mountaineering Club was originally was formed in April 1960 by Tom Colley and the late Brian Hathaway. Within 5 years a thriving walking and climbing club of some 40 members had been established. The regular meets were surprisingly widespread considering transport limitations of the day. However this level of commitment was soon in decline and by 1968 the club had effectively ceased to exist.

Also during the 1960’s enthusiasts from David Brown Gears Ltd, Samuel Fox Steelworks (Stocksbridge) and surrounding villages were involved with various outdoor pursuits. This source provided the initial membership for the re-emerging Arete Mountaineering Club of 1970 which was again coordinated by original founding member - Brian Hathaway.
