A friend who was in the eastern Sierra last weekend reported big snowfalls. Do any east-siders know how much snow at altitude, what the road access is or, the big question, what conditions are like in any of the couloirs (our friend was on Red Slate, but if anyone has recent info on Mendel, Gilbert, etc, I would be so so grateful)?

Cheers

Tom

Did Gilbert about a week ago. Mostly nevé, with frequent patches of ice, and about 50 feet of hard water ice at the top, but you can climb snow to the right side. Don't believe Secor: no way is it 50-65 degrees, more like 40-50, maybe a little steeper at the end. Fun route.

They got snowed on Monday and Wednesday night. Season's over (or starting, depending on your point of view...).

By that I suppose you mean climbing season's over, ski season is starting?

Thanks for the info
