Can anybody tell me when this road shuts down for the winter? And also .. when it DOES shut down... WHERE does it shut down?? at the start of the road south out of idaho springs or where? I plan to do Mt Evans in Oct and want to know how far I can travel this road or if I will need to go to Georgetown and head south from there. Any input will be appreciated. Thank You!!

According to the Colorado Dept of Transportation website, the Mt Evans road (Colorado Route 5) to the summit is closed for the season. You can drive to the start of Route 5 on Colorado Route 103, which starts in Idaho Springs and ends in Bergen Park. The start of Route 5 is on Route 103, 14 miles south of Idaho Springs. Route 103 is paved and is open year-round.

It is 14.5 miles from the Mt Evans entrance station to the summit via Rt. 5. Possibly the road may be open as far as treeline, which is 3 miles from the entrance station.

For more info on Colorado road status, check out the Colorado DOT website, that gives up to date info on road closures, road conditions, weather, construction projects, etc. Here's the URL:
http://www.cotrip.org/road/road.html

It would probably be quicker to do the climb from Guanella Pass by climbing Mt Bierstadt then traversing the ridge between Evans and Bierstadt.

Hope this helps.

According to this website:
http://www.mountevans.com/

the Mt Evans road is closed for the year at the entrance station at the junction of routes 103 and 5.

The loop from Idaho Springs to Evergreen remains open year round, except on heavy snow days. I snowshoe there. The turnoff from Echo Lake where the tollgate is, closes in September, typically after the first snow. That is 14 miles from the summit. Sometimes the road remains partially open to the 10 mile mile point at Summit Lake through Sept. The store at the lower Echo Lake closes the first weekend of October, after the tree colors are gone.

Before you buy.
