I was on the way to Stone Mnt and realized that we didn't have time to climb that day so we stopped in at Snake's Den to squeeze in some roadside stuff. Found some gear that's going to make good retreat gear unless someone claims it.

Spent a day frictioning and then headed to Linville Gorge. We tried to find 'The DaddY', but the shit all looks the same and the approach is... well, heinous. We ended up just climbing to get out of the gorge. Some piece of shit, lichen covered runout with sharp edges and elephant grass on the ledges. We named the route 'nightmare' 5.8+R. I wouldn't climb it again for anything. If we hadn't had twin ropes, I would have been pretty nervous.

There has been some recent discussion about twins in this type of application. Personally, I would not feel comfortable on twins in that situation. My order of preference would be Doubles, Single, Twins. I should note that my impressions on this topic are largely influenced by Mark Twight's book Extreme Alpinism.

Glutton? You lost me. Is this in regard to the other thread in which Ken and I were debating?

I think Christian is referring to your reference to Twight. It's pretty well recognized that he is a 'glutton' for punishment.

Me? I'll take the twins. Sounds like a lot of fun to me.

No, Brad, save your breath, I've read the book.

It's your propensity to regurgitate for lack of any good reason that I take issue with.

Since the book in question specifically says that thin twins are not intended to be used in places where sharp edges are prevalent, the route described above did not seem like a good application for twins. Yes, perhaps they are the thickest twins on the market and are perfectly suitable for this type of terrain. However, since the poster states that he felt more comfortable because he was using twins and made no mention of the diameter of the twins, I think my regurgitation was relevant.

Flame on...

Ken took the last vacancy and Slime's got a lock on the Office of General Bullshit Affairs, so I guess that just leaves me to do my part in expanding your 1vision.
