While climbing a while ago a guy showed us his version of tying two ropes together to do a rap off the rock. I am familiar with the Double Fisherman's Knot for this and have heard good things about it, as far as safety etc. He was using what he called a Double Death Knot. his analogy was that two double death knots were a life knot. I will agree the knot appears Bomber and after tying it myself here a the house a couple and doing some weight testing on it out back, to test to see if it loosens etc. It appears to be a solid setup. But I have this problem using anything for my life line using the word Death in it.

Any input Folks?

I am not sure what the double death knot (perhaps two overhand knots in a row) but I have switched to using a single overhand knot with long tails or a figure eight when I rappel. For years I also used a double fisherman's knot but they are a bitch to untie and worse can easily get caught in the rock. I retrived two ropes this spring that some abandoned because of this.

What idea behind using an overhand know is that it is simple to untie and when you are pulling the rope it 'spreads out' so that it is less apt to get caught. Yes is does seem pretty disconcerting but it does work.

Note: putting a second knot in the system is not a good idea because it is apt to get caught.

If you are refering to the Euro Death Knot it has several remarkable features:

1. Easy to tie/untie 2. Slides over edges/ledges 3. Gets discussed ad nausem on rec.climbing on an alternating basis with the F8 vs. Bowline threads.

Seriously, if it's two ropes joined with an overhand knot with the tails in the same direction, search deja for 'Euro Death Knot' and 'EDK'. You'll find it.

If it's something else, please post a picture on your website so we can argue about it.

What he said. And if you use a euro death knot with long tails, be sure to set up your rap on the rope, not the tails!

Hey Allen, can you make it to City of Rocks weekend after next? and when are we going to get a re-match on L29?

Deja's a pain these days. I've got a summary of the highlights of that discussion as well as links to the key posts and the entire thread on Deja here:

Hye Thanks for that Link, It helped a lot, especially the link to Petzl from there to show the reasoning behind the knot.
