Could you point me at the appropriate guidebooks for this area? Both alpine and trad climbs are of interest.

I already have the Smith Rocks guide - I'm more interested in climbs that are centered around, say, Hood River...

(Yes, I looked in Deja. Greg Daughtry seemed to be the authority, but he's dropped off-net to go climbing...)

Thanks,

I think there is a place on the Washington side called Castle Rock(?). Hopefully someone from the Portland area will be able to answer in more detail.

No, I was thinking of Beacon Rock, I think. Is that on the Washington side?

Anyway, ignore me. I'm from Seattle. RBW is the local.

It is on the Columbia river bit a bit upstream near the town of Vantage- Frenchmann;s Coulee. It is a great place with tons of routes but too hot right now! Cheers

I'm not a rock climber, as I view rock as a necessary evil needed to get one patch of snow/ice to another patch of snow/ice, but three places I know of in the Gorge are Rooster Rock, about 25 miles East of Portland off I84 (vertical dike probably 75 ft high), Beacon Rock in WA about 40 miles East of Portland off WA 14 (vertical dike about 600 ft high), and the Horsethief Butte area which is out near the Dalles, but on the WA side of the Columbia. It is sort of a mini Smith Rocks, being many climbs in the 50-100 ft range.

Another option might be the steep rock faces of Table and Greenleef Mtns in WA near Cascade Locks. I think they are like 500 ft of straight vertical, and I know I've gotten quite a queezy feeling leaning over the edge. FWIW, I consider Table Mtn to be the prettiest and best conditioning hike in the Gorge. Ya gotta love a trail that has a section known as Heartbreak Ridge, which features a small wooden plaque containing a painted broken heart at the top.

Two other areas no ones mentioned - both heading south from Hood River off highway 35

Pete's Piles - basalt columns on a hill side near one of the campgrounds (Sherman?). Nicely developed trail system, mostly trad with some anchor bolts

? Name - bolted area located between Highway 35 and Dufur, OR off of the Dufur Valley Road (don't know the number).

Vague directs from memory (may not be reliable) -from Hwy 35 take the road to Dufur ~10 - 15 mile - look for dirt road to the right (something Lookout) - in early session drive til snow blocks then walk a mile or two until you see rocks through the trees on your left. descent on trail on the south side to reach base. 20 or so bolts routes. may want pro to reach first bolt on several of the routes.

Good luck - Russ

The area by Dufur you are speaking of is called Bulo Point.
