This is more of a backpacking question, but I figure many people will have an answer/opinion.

I am looking into getting a new pair of backpacking boots. My main question is to those who have experience with gore-tex lined boots and unlined boots.

On a hot dry day of long hiking do your feet sweat more in the Gore-Tex boots vs. unlined? I have been looking at full-grain leather boots if that helps be more specific in answering.

Do leather treatments such as Nikwax work well if you take care of your boots?

I am just looking for recommendations, personal testimonies, things like that.

Thanks, -Nick Czosnyka

IMHO,gore-tex doesn't breathe well enough to keep up with the perspiration rate of the average human foot. Therefore, I wouldn't recommend it for summer backpacking unless you want to spend all your time washing and drying socks as well as tending to blisters. Go with the most breathable pair relative to your needs (climate, terrain etc.) You'll save money too. Sno-seal is a good product if you are worried about rain, snow or mud. This is only MY opinion and you know how those are.......

I use Gore Tex Socks, and only wear them when it is wet. As I live on Vancouver Island BC I get to wear them alot and they work well. When it is hot and dry my feet breathe easier with out the Gore Tex socks. I have Asolo Meridian hiking boots, I have treated them with Nikwax and they are water repellant but not waterproof.
