Only after the first second, then it gets faster by that amount every second, except that there is air resistance that keeps you from accelerating

Well, yes, If they've fallen unimpeded for exactly one second. The true expression for acceleration is 32 ft/sec/sec. At the end of 2 seconds, they are falling at 64 ft/sec, where v=a*t. Some may argue though that the speed at impact is 0. Decelleration by rock, dirt, and gravel is often much more severe than acceleration by gravity.
